David Coulthard wins Formula One opener David Coulthard got his McLaren team off to a great start by winning the Australian Grand Prix. Teammate Mika Hakkinen also got a podium finish coming in 3rd place while Michael Schumacher finished in 2nd place. Pole sitter Jacques Villeneuve 's day ended when he got ran off the course on the first corner of the first lap while World Champion Damon Hill suffered mechanical failure on the pace lap. Heinz-Harald Frentzen led most of the race but a bad pit stop and a late race problem ended his day a few laps from the end. |
