Celebrity Cars Sold; Arie Luyendyk Sponsorship Announced During Third Day of Barrett-Jackson Classic Car AuctionSCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Jan. 20 A perfectly-restored 1958 Porsche 356 Speedster owned by actor/comedian Jerry Seinfeld and a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 600 LWB 6-Door specially ordered new and formerly owned by Hugh Hefner, sold today for $86,000 and $71,000, respectively at the 30th Annual Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction. Adding to the day's bidding was baseball legend Reggie Jackson, who was personally overseeing the sale of his 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 S Cabriolet, which sold for $210,000. Barrett-Jackson President Craig Jackson also announced that Barrett-Jackson will be a sponsor of two-time Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk for his return to Indy in May. These were just several of the 215 collectible automobiles that will, by the end of the night, cross the auction block during the third day of the renowned auction, which continues on Sunday with an additional 200-plus automobiles. Bidding started at 10 a.m., and as of 6 p.m., the most expensive car sold was a 1969 Ford GT 40 Mk1 that fetched $400,000, and driven on stage by Bob Bondurant who won the famed 24 Hours of LeMans driving the same type car. Other notable sales today included a 1952 Chrysler d'Elegance Ghia Coupe which went for $310,000; a 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster for $275,000; a 1937 Bugatti Type 57 C-Atalante, $280,000; and a new special Barrett-Jackson edition Shelby Series 1 that sold for $201,000. Most enthusiasts and collectors consider the annual Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction the preeminent auction of its kind worldwide. More than 140,000 people are expected to attend during the four-day period, which concludes tomorrow.
