SMART to Start New Downtown Detroit Bus Routing
17 January 2001
SMART to Start New Downtown Detroit Bus RoutingDETROIT, Jan. 17 Effective Saturday, January 20, 2001 SMART will reroute buses in the City of Detroit. This change is in preparation of construction at Kennedy Square and the closure of Fort Street and lane reductions on Woodward and Michigan avenues and Griswold. SMART is fundamentally changing its transit operations in the City of Detroit as a result of the major construction projects. The current routing of buses in downtown has been in existence since the early 1970s. SMART buses will now travel a common transit path using Larned and Congress, Woodward, Griswold and Fort Street (west of Griswold) to maneuver through the city. However, after 8 p.m. SMART buses will be routed through Cadillac Square via Woodward and Randolph Street to accommodate transferring riders. Many bus stops are being moved or eliminated due to the routing change. Major bus stops being eliminated are on Bates, Cadillac Square and Randolph. New SMART bus stop signs will be installed at the new locations. For specific routing information and new bus stop locations, call SMART customer information at 313-962-5515 Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
