(PRNewsFoto)[AG] TROY, MI USA 10/19/2000BETIM, Brazil, Jan. 8 Delphi Automotive Systems announced today the immediate closing of its Packard Electric Division's facility in Betim, Minas Gerais. The plant, which manufactured cockpits and wiring harnesses for Fiat do Brasil S.A., ceased operations this morning. Approximately 450 employees will be released. (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20001019/DELPHIAS ) According to Scott Graham, director South American Operations, Delphi Packard Electric Systems, "Our decision to close the plant was based on the need to optimize our wiring harness business through the consolidation of our Betim and Itabirito facilities. The consolidation will result in reduced costs and greater efficiencies for the division." "This plant closing does not affect Delphi Packard Electric's long-term plans, customer support and investments in South America," said Graham. "Delphi continues to adjust its business to current market demands, which require companies to be flexible in managing costs and production."
