American Axle & Manufacturing Appoints a New Member To its Board of Directors
    DETROIT, Jan. 8 American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings,
Inc. (AAM), which is traded as AXL on the NYSE, today announced that Larry W.
McCurdy has joined its board of directors.  McCurdy is the former chairman,
president & CEO of Echlin Inc.
    Throughout a career that spanned four decades, McCurdy held senior
executive positions at several automotive companies including Echlin Inc.,
where he served as chairman, president & CEO from March 1997 until its merger
with Dana Corporation in 1998.  He also held senior executive positions at
Cooper Industries Inc.; Moog Automotive Inc. where he served as president and
CEO; and Tenneco Inc., where he served as president of its subsidiary Walker
Manufacturing and executive vice president of the company's North American
Operations.  McCurdy served as president of the Dana Automotive Aftermarket
group from 1998 until his retirement in August 2000.
    The solid reputation that McCurdy established throughout his career has
been recognized by several organizations.  In 1988 he was honored as
Automotive Man of the Year by Motor magazine and he received that same
recognition from the Automotive Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA) in
1991.  He is the past chairman of the Motor and Equipment Manufacturers
Association (MEMA) and received the Triangle Award from that organization in
1993.
    In 2000, McCurdy received the first MEMA Lifetime Service Award, the AWDA
Martin Fromm Lifetime Achievement Award and the Automotive Aftermarket
Industry Association (AAIA) Industry Leader of the Year Award.

    In addition to his seat on the board of directors of AAM, McCurdy also
serves as a director of Breed Technologies Inc., Lear Corporation, Mohawk
Industries Inc., and General Parts Inc.
    McCurdy is a native of Commerce, Texas and graduated from Texas A&M
University with a bachelor of business administration.  He and his wife, Anna
Jean, live in Madison, Conn., and have three adult children.
