Andy Stevens Appointed Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Defence UnitLONDON, Jan. 5 Rolls-Royce plc has appointed Andy Stevens as Managing Director, Defence (Europe), a business unit of more than 2,000 people mostly situated at the Rolls-Royce site in Bristol. Formerly Chief Operating Officer at Messier-Dowty International, Andy Stevens will liaise closely with the company's other defence aerospace operations in North America. Collectively, the defence business of Rolls-Royce supports almost 30,000 engines for 160 armed forces. He said: "I am looking forward to this challenging task. The defence industry is an exciting sector, and one in which Rolls-Royce has a considerable presence, with an impressive portfolio of aero-engine products. I hope to be able to build further on the excellent work of the team in Bristol, which has a sound customer base and is seeking to develop new markets and explore with customers new ways of doing business." Andy Stevens joined the Cheltenham-based Dowty Group in 1976 as a graduate apprentice, after earning a first-class Honours degree in Production Engineering at Aston University. He progressed through a number of positions within Dowty Rotol before becoming a board member of Dowty Aerospace in 1989 and being appointed Director and General Manager, Landing Gear UK, in 1992. He spent two years with Bowthorpe plc before returning to Messier Dowty International, part of the TI Group, as Managing Director UK, moving to the MD Europe post in 1997. He takes over from Sue Lyons who is leaving the company. Sue Lyons joined Rolls-Royce in 1975. Initially, her activity centred on manufacturing engineering, but she soon extended this experience into general management roles. She left the company in 1986 to joint Precision Castparts Corporation, latterly as its Managing Director, before returning to Rolls-Royce in 1989 as Director of Manufacturing Engineering. Two years later she moved over to the defence side of Rolls-Royce's business as Project Director - Combat Engines. She took up the post of Managing Director in 1998, the same year she was awarded the OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
