Toyota Hits Record North American Production in 2000ERLANGER, Ky., Jan. 4 Toyota produced over 1.1 million vehicles at its North America manufacturing facilities in 2000, up 3.9% over last year's totals. Toyota, the fourth largest automaker in North America, has three vehicle assembly plants in the United States and one in Canada. "We are proud of the outstanding accomplishments of our manufacturing facilities over the past year," said Teruyuki Minoura, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc. . "Not only did we surpass last year's total production results, but Toyota also swept the J.D. Power and Associates 2000 Initial Quality Study Awards. This shows that as we continue to grow our North American manufacturing operations we are not sacrificing the quality of the Toyota product." This year's total production was more than 1,103,000* vehicles. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK) is home of the Toyota Camry, best selling car in America four years in a row. This year TMMK produced 495,582 vehicles -- 251,767 Camry sedans, 120,252 Avalons, and 123,563 Sienna minivans -- at its Georgetown, Ky. facility, which employs about 7,900 team members. The plant also machines and assembles four-cylinder and V-6 engines (269,042 and 210,598 respectively for 2000CY). Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana, Inc. (TMMI), located in Princeton, Ind., celebrated the launch of Toyota's new full-size SUV, the Sequoia, this year. With this new vehicle, the plant produced 129,724 vehicles -- 114,724 Tundras and 15,000 Sequoias -- a dramatic increase over last year's 56,176 vehicles. Additionally, TMMI broke ground for an $800 million expansion making way for the production of the Sienna minivan in 2003. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Inc. production remained steady with a total of 183,739 vehicles -- 133,043 Corollas and 50,696 Camry Solaras. In April 2000, Toyota announced the $450 million expansion of its Cambridge, Ontario plant to build the Lexus RX 300, making it the first plant to produce a Lexus model outside of Japan. Rounding out Toyota's North American production milestone were vehicles produced at New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI), a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors in Fremont, Calif. NUMMI, which employs approximately 5,000 team members, produced 294,093 Toyota vehicles, including 147,739 Corollas and 146,354 Tacoma trucks. NUMMI also manufactured 50,019 Chevrolet Prizms (not included in the 1,103,138 production figure for Toyota). In addition to automobile manufacturing in North America, Toyota has plants that make parts and components for Toyota vehicles. Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc. in Buffalo, W. Va., machines and assembles four-cylinder and V6 engines. This year, production at this facility grew significantly to 290,209 units -- 192,069 four-cylinder and 98,140 V6 engines -- up from 123,435 last year. Additionally, Bodine Aluminum, Inc., in Troy, Mo., casts aluminum parts such as cylinder heads, intake manifolds and engine blocks. TABC, Inc. in Long Beach, Calif., manufactures truck beds, catalytic converters, coated substrates and steering columns. Finally, Canadian Autoparts Toyota, Inc. in Delta, British Columbia produces aluminum wheels. * Based on preliminary vehicle production totals as of December 23, 2000.
