Toyota Hits Record North American Production in 2000
ERLANGER, Ky., Jan. 4 Toyota produced over 1.1 million
vehicles at its North America manufacturing facilities in 2000, up 3.9% over
last year's totals. Toyota, the fourth largest automaker in North America,
has three vehicle assembly plants in the United States and one in Canada.
"We are proud of the outstanding accomplishments of our manufacturing
facilities over the past year," said Teruyuki Minoura, president of Toyota
Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc. . "Not only did we surpass
last year's total production results, but Toyota also swept the J.D. Power and
Associates 2000 Initial Quality Study Awards. This shows that as we continue
to grow our North American manufacturing operations we are not sacrificing the
quality of the Toyota product."
This year's total production was more than 1,103,000* vehicles. Toyota
Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK) is home of the Toyota Camry, best
selling car in America four years in a row. This year TMMK produced 495,582
vehicles -- 251,767 Camry sedans, 120,252 Avalons, and 123,563 Sienna minivans
-- at its Georgetown, Ky. facility, which employs about 7,900 team members.
The plant also machines and assembles four-cylinder and V-6 engines (269,042
and 210,598 respectively for 2000CY).
Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana, Inc. (TMMI), located in Princeton,
Ind., celebrated the launch of Toyota's new full-size SUV, the Sequoia, this
year. With this new vehicle, the plant produced 129,724 vehicles -- 114,724
Tundras and 15,000 Sequoias -- a dramatic increase over last year's 56,176
vehicles. Additionally, TMMI broke ground for an $800 million expansion
making way for the production of the Sienna minivan in 2003.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Inc. production remained steady with a
total of 183,739 vehicles -- 133,043 Corollas and 50,696 Camry Solaras. In
April 2000, Toyota announced the $450 million expansion of its Cambridge,
Ontario plant to build the Lexus RX 300, making it the first plant to produce
a Lexus model outside of Japan.
Rounding out Toyota's North American production milestone were vehicles
produced at New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI), a joint venture
between Toyota and General Motors in Fremont, Calif. NUMMI, which employs
approximately 5,000 team members, produced 294,093 Toyota vehicles, including
147,739 Corollas and 146,354 Tacoma trucks. NUMMI also manufactured 50,019
Chevrolet Prizms (not included in the 1,103,138 production figure for Toyota).
In addition to automobile manufacturing in North America, Toyota has
plants that make parts and components for Toyota vehicles. Toyota Motor
Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc. in Buffalo, W. Va., machines and assembles
four-cylinder and V6 engines. This year, production at this facility grew
significantly to 290,209 units -- 192,069 four-cylinder and 98,140 V6 engines
-- up from 123,435 last year.
Additionally, Bodine Aluminum, Inc., in Troy, Mo., casts aluminum parts
such as cylinder heads, intake manifolds and engine blocks. TABC, Inc. in
Long Beach, Calif., manufactures truck beds, catalytic converters, coated
substrates and steering columns. Finally, Canadian Autoparts Toyota, Inc. in
Delta, British Columbia produces aluminum wheels.
