Toyota Sets Sales Record for Fifth Year in a Row - Camry Retains Title as America's Best-Selling Car
    TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 3 Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.,
Inc., today reported best-ever year-end total sales of 1,619,206 vehicles, up
9.7 percent while the Camry became the best-selling car in America for the
fourth year in a row.  2000 marks the 11th consecutive year that Toyota sold
more than one million cars and trucks, and the fifth year-in-a-row that TMS
set a total year-end sales record.
    Total Toyota sales for December totaled 133,993, an increase of
14.2 percent over the same period last year.
    "The economy is down-shifting from delirious to deliberate and we have
just passed a sign saying 'Proceed with Caution,'" said Jim Press, TMS
executive vice president.  "Last year was great, this year will be merely
good."
    Toyota Division's best-ever year-end total of 1,413,169 vehicles, up
9.6 percent, marked the seventh consecutive year that the Toyota Division has
topped one million units.  Toyota Division passenger cars and light trucks
reported best-ever annual sales of 871,274 and 646,491 respectively.
    The Toyota Division reported December sales of 112,825, up 11.6 percent.
The popular Camry earned its "best-selling car in America" title by posting
year-end sales of 422,961.  Camry also reported strong December sales of
36,811, an increase of 27.5 percent.
    The all-new Prius gas/electric hybrid vehicle continued to post strong
sales with 1,134 units sold, giving it a year-end total of 5,562 sales since
it launched in mid-July.  Avalon posted year-end sales of 104,078, an increase
of 53.0 percent, while the Celica sport coupe recorded 52,406 year-end sales,
up 219.2 percent.  The ECHO subcompact sedan totaled 48,876 units for the
year, up 365.9 percent, while the all-new MR2 Spyder notched 7,233 sales since
its launch last Spring.
    The Tundra full-size pickup led Toyota light-truck sales with best-ever
December sales of 7,806, up 19.8 percent and best-ever year-end total sales of
100,455, an increase of 134.9 percent.  The all-new RAV4 sport utility vehicle
(SUV) recorded its best-ever December with 7,126 units sold, up 122.8 percent.
The all-new Sequoia continued its strong launch with 4,900 sales.  The Tacoma
compact pickup posted December sales of 13,127, up 32.6 percent.  The Sienna
minivan posted best-ever year-end sales of 103,137, an increase of 4.4 percent
over last year.
    The Lexus Division enjoyed its best-ever sales year with 206,037 units
sold, an increase of 10.2 percent.  The Lexus Division also enjoyed its best-
ever December with sales of 21,168 units, up 30.5 percent over the same period
last year.
    Lexus sales were led by the popular RX 300 SUV with best-ever December
sales of 9,248, an increase of 22.8 percent.  Year-end RX 300 sales totaled a
best-ever 89,864, up 22.3 percent over last year.  The IS 300 sport sedan
continued to post strong sales with 2,147 units sold, giving it a year-end
total of 15,540 sales.  The all-new LS 430 premium luxury sedan recorded
2,940 sales for December, up 312.1 percent.  The GS 430 performance sedan
reported 499 units sold for December, up 25.7 percent over the same period
last year.
    Total Toyota sales of North American-built vehicles totaled 992,613,
representing 61.3 percent of total vehicles sold in 2000.  There were
307 selling days in 2000, which equals the number in 1999.
