Chevron Delo 400 Multigrade Meets New Global DHD-1 Specification

29 December 2000

Chevron Delo 400(R) Multigrade Becomes First Diesel Engine Oil to Meet New Global DHD-1 Specification
Customers Able for the First Time to Streamline Costs and Inventories By
Purchasing a Single Oil for Diesel Engines Worldwide

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 28 Chevron added to its long list of
industry milestones by announcing today that Delo 400 Multigrade is the first
and only diesel engine oil to meet the world's first global diesel engine oil
performance specification, Global DHD-1. As a result, diesel engine owners
will be able to streamline costs and inventories by purchasing a single oil
for their Japanese, European and U.S. diesel engines.
Global DHD-1 was developed jointly by the Association des Constructeurs
Europeens D'Automobiles (ACEA), Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) and
Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA). The specification was
created to address the growing trend in worldwide distribution of engine
technologies, emerging similarities in engine design due to the move toward
global emissions standards and facilitate common oil test development. Global
DHD-1 will be implemented in February 2001.
"The financial benefits for global companies are significant," said Mike
Dargento, Senior Market Manager, Chevron. "By meeting this new global
performance specification, customers will realize the potential for reduced
operating costs by streamlining inventories within the global supply chain. At
the same time, Delo 400's unique performance advantages will create further
cost efficiencies, enabling maximum equipment life and standardized
preventative maintenance operation worldwide."
Chevron markets Delo 400 Multigrade in North and South America and Europe.
In Asia, Australia, Eastern Africa and the Middle East, Delo 400 is available
through Caltex, a 50 percent Chevron-owned joint venture of more than 60
years.

World Oil Proven to Out-perform the Best Regional Oils
Evidence has shown that a world oil outperforms even the best regional
oils. According to the results of a 2000 Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
paper (2000-01-1984), "Formulating a heavy duty diesel engine oil to meet a
variety of worldwide lubrication requirements results in a more robust
formulation, outperforming oils designed to meet only regional requirements."
As the first oil to meet this worldwide performance specification, Chevron
Delo 400 Multigrade becomes the only oil to achieve a new global standard for
the industry, both in performance and value.

Need for a World Oil Performance Specification
The diesel engine market is impacted by regulatory changes in emissions
standards worldwide, requiring OEMs and oil suppliers to respectively alter
diesel engine designs and upgrade existing lubricant formulas. These
alterations add to any oil manufacturer's challenge in producing
performance-based products with universal market appeal. Prior to Global
DHD-1, lubricants were subject to three different performance specifications
in Europe (ACEA E5), Japan (JASO DH-1) and North America (API CH-4).
Global DHD-1, which combines these three specifications, identifies engine
oils acceptable for use in heavy-duty diesel engines designed to meet 1998 and
newer exhaust emissions standards worldwide. Given evolving emissions
requirements, Global DHD-2 will be developed for 2005 using tests defined by
the OEMs from all three global regions.
"Chevron Delo 400's unique performance advantages translate to stronger
competitive advantages and cost savings for our customers in a fierce global
marketplace," continued Dargento. "These advantages and savings could not be
realized without a lubricant whose performance quality are able to meet the
demands of Global DHD-1."
