International Panels at SAE Congress Confer on Asian Commerce And the Environment
    WARRENDALE, Pa., Dec. 18 The status of the automotive
industry in Southeast Asia and the state of the environment worldwide form the
topics for three international panels being held at the 2001 SAE World
Congress in Detroit, Michigan March 5-8, 2000.
    All international panels will take place on March 7, International Day, at
the SAE World Congress.  "Global Environmental Legislation and the Impact on
Automotive Business will take center stage from 9 to 11 a.m.; the "End of Life
Vehicles in Emerging Economies" panel follows at 2 p.m.; and the ASEAN, The
Association of Southeast Asian Nations panel will conclude the international
discussions from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
    Immediately following the panels, there will be an International Reception
from 6:30 to 8 p.m. featuring the 2001 International Leadership Citation
winner, Dr. Helmut List, President and CEO, AVL.
    ASEAN is an organization of 18 nations in Southeast Asia who have banded
together to accelerate economic progress as well as social and cultural
development in the region.  ASEAN represents close to 500 million people.  The
passenger car fleet in the region has reached 10 million units and there is
currently a commercial fleet of 3.3 million.
    Panelist for the Spotlight on ASEAN include: Dr. Nguyen Xuan Chuan, Vice
Minister of Industry, Vietnam; James D. Power IV, Partner, Director of
International Operations, J.D. Power and Associates; Albert T. Warner,
Director, Motor Vehicle Division, Office of Automotive Affairs, U.S.
Department of Commerce; Dr. Christopher C. Green, Executive Director, GM Asia
Pacific Region and Dr.-Ing. Gunadi Sindhuwinata, Former Secretary General,
ASEAN Automotive Federation, Indonesia.  Dr. Dennis Schuetzle, Director,
Research and Technology, Ford Asia Pacific Operations, Ford Motor Company,
will serve as moderator.
    For the environmental legislation panel, Doris L. Hill, Senior Staff
Engineer, Design for the Environment, General Motors Corporation, will act as
moderator.  Panelists include Remi Kaiser, European Director Technology,
Quality Environment, Delphi Automotive Systems; Fernando Sinn, Executive
Director, New Business Development, Atoma International Corporation; Dr.
Fumihiko Kimura, Professor, Department of Precision Machinery Engineering, The
University of Tokyo; Dr. Louis Dixon, Manager, Global Materials and Fastener
Standards, Ford Motor Company; and Lisa O'Donoghue, EU Affairs Communications
Manager, GM Europe.
    The end of life vehicles panel lists Dr. Sindhuwinata, Dr. G. Mustafa
Mohatarem, Chief Economist, General Motors Corporation; Dr. Harendra S.
Ghandi, Technical Fellow, Ford Motor Company; and Ms. Ginny Whelan, CEO, Pro
Auto Recyclers.
