The end for Mitsubishi Australia? Asks just-auto.comLONDON, Dec. 18 http://www.just-auto.com -- The smallest of the four car manufacturers in Australia, Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd (MMAL), has already received a US$90 million rescue package but it is doubtful that this will turn the Adelaide-based car-making subsidiary around. The report at http://just-auto.com/features_detail.asp?art=404 says that Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) in Japan agreed to bail out MMAL after pleas from managing director, Tom Phillips. Just four months into his job Phillips convinced the new management team and Daimler Chrysler who had acquired 34% controlling interest of MMC that he could turn the company around into a profit-making company in the near future. Although Phillips is optimistic, as the fourth ranked Australian manufacturer, MMAL has never been as popular as its three rivals, Toyota, Holden and Ford. Now it remains to be seen if it can, as Phillips proposed, become a vital cog in car manufacturing in the Asia-Pacific region.
