End of the Road for Oldsmobile? GM Ponders its Fate Today On TheCarConnection.com
DETROIT, Dec. 12 Is General Motors about to axe
Oldsmobile?
According to rumor rife in Detroit this morning, GM is prepared to shut
down the flagging division or merge it into another brand. A press conference
scheduled for 11 a.m. EST, where officials will deal with the "restructuring
of Oldsmobile," is said to be the official announcement of the division's
fate. Today, TheCarConnection.com will be tracking the story as it develops.
Elsewhere in this week's issue, TCC takes another look at the problems in
Auburn Hills. No car manufacturer is having a harder time than
DaimlerChrysler, and in its continuing Chrysler Chronicles, TCC takes you
inside the ailing automaker. Will suppliers accept Chrysler's demands for big
cost cuts? Will losses be even worse than imagined? And what about DC
Chairman Juergen Schrempp's surprise marriage?
Can the Internet save you time and money on auto repairs? That's what the
Big 3 automakers are betting with their new online joint venture, the OE
Connection. TC will tell you how it might help you. And TheCarConnection.com
also looks at GM's hip new online buying service down in Brazil. What you see
may be what you get when the next-generation Saturn buying site launches,
perhaps as early as next year.
In this week's reviews, TCC looks at the 2001 Jaguar line-up, goes for a
fast spin in the Audi A8L, and captures spy shots of the next-generation
Mercedes-Benz CLK. And don't miss TheCarConnection's special report on two
hot concepts from Honda. You'll see the thinly-disguised RS-X show up in
production form as the next Acura Integra. But what about the wild and quirky
Model X? This unusual crossover vehicle, TCC has learned, is likely to show
up in production, as well, and you'll be the first to see what it looks like.
