Car and Driver Readers Tell Outrageous Tales in 10Best Contest
Parkers, Frankenstein Cars and Driver Antics Make the List

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Dec. 11 Ever been parking in a deserted
drive-in, decorate cupcakes while driving or behold a rainbow-hued '69 Rolls-
Royce tank? If not, check out the January 2001 issue of Car and Driver
magazine.
The issue features the winners of Car and Driver's 10Best Readers'
Contest. Categories include "Parking-With-a-Date Stories," "Frankenstein
Cars" and "Dumb Things Drivers Do While Driving." Among the winning entries:

    * "A Kitchen-Table Dashboard," submitted by Brian Sokolow, who witnessed
a caterer decorating cupcakes while negotiating rush-hour traffic. "A lot of
those cupcake smiley faces looked mighty scared," said Sokolow.
    * "Samson in New Jersey," submitted by Roy W. Yost, whose parking
adventure led him over the edge of a dry creek bed.
    * "Getting a Nice Edge," submitted by Diana Jowett, who watched in
disbelief as the driver of a BMW opened his door to sharpen his pencil against
the pavement on the Hollywood Freeway.
    * "Urban Tank," submitted by Matt Slimmer, who "picked up a '69 Rolls-
Royce for $1,100 at a storage auction, and rather than fix it up and pocket,
oh, 50 or so grand, turned it into -- of course! -- an urban tank."

Unlike Car and Driver's traditional 10Best Cars competition, which
annually ranks the 10 best models, the 10Best Readers' Contest takes an
irreverent look at the "best of the worst" in the automotive galaxy. Entries
were judged by Car and Driver staffers, with the winners receiving $50 and a
Car and Driver hooded sweatshirt.
"We sought the most unusual, wacky or humorous stories or photos about our
readers and their cars," said Editor-in-Chief Csaba Csere. "Judging by some
of the entries, there are some pretty outrageous and inventive drivers out
there."
Car and Driver magazine, headquartered in Ann Arbor, Mich., is the world's
largest circulation automotive magazine and the premier source of information
for automobile enthusiasts. Content includes everything from new car
previews, road tests and features to industry news and automotive humor.
