DaimlerChrysler Workers Volunteer to Protect Detroit Students for National Conference for Community and Justice Program
DETROIT, Dec. 11 More than 50 DaimlerChrysler employees at
the Jefferson North Assembly Plant have volunteered to participate in the
Detroit Safe Streets Network by patrolling the eight school communities near
the plant to assure children are safe as they walk to and from school. An
organizational meeting involving the DaimlerChrysler employees and
representatives from NCCJ (National Conference for Community and Justice) will
take place on Tuesday, December 12 at 6 a.m. at the end of the night shift at
the plant located at East Jefferson and Conner on Detroit's cast side.
The Detroit Safe Streets Network initiative seeks to protect Detroit area
students as they travel to and from school by recruiting groups to patrol in
neighborhoods around schools and to coordinate their activities so that they
have the widest possible impact. The eight school communities the
DaimlerChrysler employees will patrol are Finney and Southeastern High Schools
and Foch, Butzel, Rosa Parks, Joy, Remus Robinson and Miller Middle Schools.
Safe Streets is a coalition involving the Mayor's Office, the Detroit
Police Department and citizens radio patrols in conjunction with community
groups, churches, businesses and schools. NCCJ and The Youth Connection
coordinate the entire effort.
Members of the media wishing to attend Tuesday morning's meeting should
enter the plant via the Vernor Street side (circular drive) and park in the
visitors parking area. Enter through the west door and ask for Ron Meadows or
Mike Brown.
NCCJ is a non profit human relations organization dedicated to empowering
leadership in governmental business faith and other sectors to build more
inclusive and just community institutions. For more information about NCCJ
