Automobile Club of Southern California Turns 100; Centennial Activities Dec. 13-16 Cap Off the Year 2000
LOS ANGELES--Dec. 8, 2000--The Auto Club officially turns 100 next week.Join the company for its birthday activities.
-- Wednesday, Dec. 13 -- 9:30 a.m.-- Auto Club Historian Matt Roth will lead reporters on a "car culture" tour of roadside landmarks, including car washes, gas stations, dealerships and giant buildings like Kindle's Do-Nuts at Normandie Avenue and Century. Call 714/885-2333 to reserve a seat and lunch. Space limited. Bus departs from historic Auto Club headquarters, 2601 S. Figueroa, Los Angeles. Returns to headquarters at 2 p.m. -- Thursday, Dec. 14 -- 9 a.m.-- The Auto Club and the Smithsonian Institution hold a transportation symposium, "Activism and Mobility in the Global City," looking at the past, present and future of transportation in Los Angeles. The event will take place at USC, Davidson Conference Center, corner of Figueroa and Jefferson. Call 714/885-2333 in advance for parking info. -- Friday, Dec. 15 -- 10 a.m.-- At Auto Club headquarters, a tow truck convoy will deliver new toys to children at Los Angeles' Orthopaedic Hospital, 2400 S. Flower St. Santa will be riding on a flatbed tow truck to join the annual patient holiday party. Toys were collected from members and employees at the Auto Club's 68 district offices. -- Saturday, Dec. 16 -- 9 a.m.-- The centennial celebration concludes at the California Science Center in Exposition Park. The Club is hosting a member day with an antique auto show, crafts, "Otto the Auto" traffic safety presentations for children and IMAX Theater discounts.
