The TReK Finals took place recently on the grounds of The Greenbrier, a world-class vacation resort located in the mountains of West Virginia. Land Rover TReK is a rigorous off-road driving competition designed to build product knowledge and brand enthusiasm among all Land Rover retailers. This year's Land Rover TReK brought three-person Land Rover retailer teams from throughout the U.S., Canada and Australia to West Virginia to compete in one of the six Trial events. The winning team from each Trial advanced to the November 16 Finals. Overall winner Land Rover Greenville's team included technician Tim Scully, parts manager Ross Shelnutt and sales guide Bill Silva. The Greenville team won Land Rover TReK 2000 by acquiring the most total points -- 700 of a possible 800 -- in eight intense four-wheel drive and outdoor sporting contests that included an autocross, a kayak regatta and a time/speed/distance rally. "This was incredible," remarked an enthusiastic Bill Silva. "TReK is the type of event that only a handful of people in the world get to do. This trophy is for our dealership, our team and for everyone who made this competition come alive." Most of the TReK events required the use of specially equipped Land Rover Discovery Series II vehicles manufactured in England by Land Rover Special Vehicles. The TReK events began at 5 a.m. with a logic quiz on off-road driving, Land Rover vehicles and their competitors; a Land Rover "Service Drive" task race that included winching and tire-changing exercises; an autocross; an English trials course; an orienteering exercise; and a time/speed/distance off-road rally. Also part of the TReK 2000 Finals was a running, mountain biking and kayaking regatta. The main event was the "TReK Test Drive," an off-road obstacle course that required the teams to maneuver their Discovery Series IIs through extreme off-road situations such as an "incline bridge" obstacle and a 60-degree side-tilt. "TReK is a unique motivational competition that helps give Land Rover an edge in the marketplace," said Howard Mosher, president and CEO of Land Rover North America, Inc. "Land Rovers are highly specialized four-wheel drive vehicles that demand a knowledgeable and enthusiastic sales and service organization. TReK helps us maintain our leadership on the four-wheel drive front." Land Rover TReK was created by Land Rover University, the service training and development arm of Land Rover North America, Inc. TReK was developed out of Land Rover's belief that motivated, knowledgeable and capable Land Rover retail personnel create a superlative ownership experience for the sport- utility maker's customers. "The goal of TReK goes beyond giving our teams a good workout. It gets them excited about Land Rover," remarked Bob Burns, training and development manager for Land Rover North America. "The message of TReK is: if you are smart about what you're doing, a Land Rover can help take you anywhere. That concept is certainly worth getting excited about, and our customers can definitely feel that excitement when they visit a Land Rover Centre and start asking our sales personnel about Land Rover." TReK 2000 winner Land Rover Greenville is one of 143 Land Rover retail outlets currently doing business in the U.S. and Canada. Eighty-six of these retailers are critically acclaimed Land Rover Centres. Due in large part to Land Rover University's benchmark training programs and team-building events like TReK, Land Rover retailers continue to score near the top of the industry in critical retailer-focused customer satisfaction studies. Land Rover retailers also benefit from very low employee turnover rates. To qualify for TReK, each participating retailer must have scored a 90 or better in Land Rover North America Inc.'s most recent internal customer satisfaction index research, among other requirements. Entry was offered to the qualified Land Rover retailers on a first-come, first-served basis. The Greenbrier, home of Land Rover TReK '00, is a world-class, 6,500-acre resort located in West Virginia's Allegheny Mountains, approximately 260 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The Greenbrier is also home to a permanent, year-round Land Rover driving school that was established in 1999. The first Land Rover TReK event was held in Social Circle, Ga., not far from Atlanta, in 1996. Subsequent TReK events have been held in Tinmouth, Vt. and Bodega Bay, Calif. /NOTE TO EDITORS: Land Rover North America, Inc., established in 1986, imports and distributes Range Rover and Discovery Series II vehicles manufactured for sale in the U.S. by Land Rover Group Limited in Solihull, England.
