SME Offers Online Training Courses For the Manufacturing and Engineering CommunitySME Adds E-Learning for Manufacturing Training DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 7 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) announces that it is currently offering two online courses for the manufacturing and engineering community, Lean Manufacturing Fundamentals and Planning Manufacturing Cells Fundamentals. These online courses are unique in their engaging and interactive approach and enable individuals to learn faster and at less cost than public courses. The Michigan Virtual University is a co-sponsor. "SME is the first professional society offering online training for the manufacturing community," says Nancy Berg, SME executive director and general manager. "Manufacturing professionals and companies can now opt to learn via the Internet and these two online courses are only the beginning of SME's new ground-breaking innovations with e-learning." According to John McEachran, director of SME's Continuing Education & Professional Development Division, "Engineering professionals want to learn about the latest technologies, but many times they have a time crunch. Registrants can take the courses at home or work at whatever time is most convenient. They can work at their own pace, reduce their scheduling conflicts and avoid travel while receiving quality, dynamic training. They can also manage their learning outcome through module assessments." Lean Manufacturing Fundamentals identifies the best practices for understanding and implementing different portions of lean manufacturing in an organization. The online course is designed to help an individual think through the process of lean implementation. There are pre-assessment and module assessment questions to help monitor an individual's understanding of lean manufacturing and the information presented. The second online course, Planning Manufacturing Cells Fundamentals, highlights the fundamentals of planning and implementation of a simple or small manufacturing cell and presents the three fundamentals of cell planning: parts, process and coupling.
