Motor Press Guild Names Dean Batchelor Award Winners
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 6 The Motor Press Guild presented two
Dean Batchelor Awards at its annual Holiday Awards Dinner held last night at
the Petersen Automotive Museum. The recipients were Los Angeles Times sports
writer Shav Glick and author Janos Wimpffen.
The Motor Press Guild annually recognizes outstanding achievements by
automotive writers, photographers and broadcasters with the Dean Batchelor
Award. In addition, the Dean Batchelor Lifetime Achievement Award is given to
those deemed to have made outstanding contributions to the automotive
industry.
Shav Glick, this year's Lifetime Achievement winner, has been covering the
sports arena since 1942. A native Californian, he's worked as a sports
writer/editor for the Berkeley Gazette, Pasadena Star News, Mirror News and
the LA Times which he has called home since 1963. His automotive racing
coverage has not only informed and entertained millions of readers over the
years but has garnered numerous prestigious awards.
Janos Wimpffen, this year's Dean Batchelor Award winner has been an avid
motor racing enthusiast for 35 years. "Time and Two Seats -- Five Decades of
Long Distance Racing" is his first foray into motor racing literature. This
two-volume set covers The World Sports Car, Grand Touring and Manufacturers
Championships with forewords by Phil Hill, Brian Redman and Derek Bell.
Chronicling every race, every car and every driver it is considered by many to
be the standard reference in the field.
The Dean Batchelor Awards were established in 1995 and named in honor of
one of the icons of automotive journalism. Dean Batchelor was a man whose
passion for automobiles led him to many positions in various magazines in the
industry and also to author several definitive books. In addition, Batchelor
was actively involved in motorsports, designing and building the
"So-Cal Streamliner" racecar that was used as inspiration for the award.
