Motorola Presents Sensor Market With Size-Conscious Mini-PAKRobust M-PAK Designed to Meet Customer's Space Constraints and Reliability Requirements MUNICH, Germany, Nov. 21 Sensor customers received a boost from Motorola today with the announcement of a space saving Mini-PAK (M-PAK) pressure sensor package that is six times smaller than its predecessor. A welcome advantage for designers and manufacturers in the automotive, industrial, and consumer markets that find themselves continually challenged with fitting more electronics into less space. Motorola's M-PAK portfolio is a silicon resistive pressure sensor that is engineered to provide a highly accurate and linear voltage output -- directly proportional to the applied pressure. Designed at a smaller size (just 12.5mm x 6.5mm), for applications such as home appliances, automotive air filters, or industrial pressure meters, the Mini-Pak also can withstand very high temperatures and chemical contact, making it safe for use in harsh environments. "At Motorola we are very proud of our leadership position in the pressure sensor market. We understand that to remain number one, we must continue to strive forward by answering customers' needs and requests," stated Tom Hatfield, Pressure Sensor Operations Manager at Motorola. "The M-PAK addresses three critical customer concerns -- the need for a smaller, more durable and highly flexible sensor package." The M-PAK sensor is a single, monolithic silicon diaphragm with the strain gauge and a thin, film resistor network integrated on-chip. The chip is laser trimmed for precise span and offset calibration and temperature compensation. The package itself offers the convenience of a surface mount package for ease of manufacturing, and a small outline requiring very little board space. It is the perfect part for those designs and applications where space is a premium. New features that the Motorola's M-Pak boasts -- 12.5mm x 6.5mm package size -- Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) package material -- Pressure Range from 10 to 200 kPa -- 40 mV full scale span typical -- Temperature compensated over 0 to +85 degrees C -- Automotive grade devices available (-40 to +125 degrees C) -- Easy to use tape and reel -- Ratiometric to supply voltage -- Available with Absolute, Gauge, and Sensor Elements -- Ported and un-ported options available -- Unique silicon shear strain gauge Expected to be available December 1, 2000, the M-PAK sensors are competitively priced with the industry.
