Motorola Announces Design of LIN Specific Flash Microcontroller to Drive Systems Solutions for In-vehicle Communications and Networking
Advanced, Cost-effective and Flexible Solution Will Bring Standardization of
In-car Multiplexing and Networks to a New Level

MUNICH, Germany, Nov. 21 Advanced automotive design
received a boost from Motorola today with the announcement that Motorola is in
the final design stages of its first LIN Slave (Local Interconnect Network)
Specific microcontroller, the Flash based MC68HC908EY8, which will further
enhance Motorola's range of systems solutions for in-vehicle communications
and networking.
    Targeted for 2Q 2001 availability for sampling, Motorola's MC68HC908EY8
boasts an impressive on chip peripheral set including dedicated functionality
required to synchronize with a LIN Bus, which uses a single wire
implementation to reduce cost and compliment CAN in low end nodes. "Motorola
once more demonstrates its overriding and continued commitment to the
automotive industry, by working with some of the world's leading OEM's to
define and standardize the next generation of in-vehicle communication and
network architectures" stated Juergen Weyer, Vice President and General
Manager of the Body Electronics and Occupant Safety Division. "As the future
unfolds, Motorola's leadership in embedded solutions, such as the
MC68HC908EY8, are designed to enable a new generation of smart, intuitive and
easy to use products for the automotive market."
Motorola is the only semiconductor manufacturer in the LIN consortium,
which also includes Audi AG, BMW AG, Daimler Chrysler AG, Volvo Car
Corporation AB, Volkswagen AG and Volcano Communications Technologies AB
(VCT). Motorola expects to continue to strengthen its global leadership
position, providing customers industry-leading technology to enable total
systems solutions for the automotive market.
The MC68HC908EY8 will be the first in a family of dedicated LIN devices
from Motorola addressing the rapidly developing LIN market, and is expected to
be qualified to full automotive AEC standards. Device features include high
performance 8-bit (HC08) Core, 8K bytes of on chip Flash (with 10K write
erase) and 256 bytes of RAM. The on chip RC Oscillator (+/- 2% accuracy)
aids synchronization with the LIN bus and the Enhanced SCI allows 13 bit LIN
break detection capability without the use of an external timer channel.
Packaged in a small footprint 32 pin QFP and including an 8-ch 8-bit A/D, two
16 bit dual channel timers and an SPI, strength and performance of the
M68HC908EY8 is obvious, making it truly suitable as a LIN Slave Node MCU.
Samples of the MC68HC908EY8 are expected to be available in Q2 2001 with
supporting software and development tools to enable immediate design-ins.
Production quantities are scheduled to follow later in 2001.
