Dana Corporation's Spicer Driveshaft Division Earns Malcolm Baldrige National Quality AwardBecomes Dana's Second Operation to Receive Honor TOLEDO, Ohio, Nov. 21 Dana Corporation's Spicer Driveshaft Division has earned the 2000 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for manufacturing. The Baldrige Award is the premier quality award in the United States and is expected to be presented at a later date in Washington D.C. The Spicer Driveshaft Division -- which represents Dana's founding products and is the company's second largest operating group in terms of sales dollars -- is the second Dana operation to win the Baldrige Award. Dana Commercial Credit Corporation, the company's leasing subsidiary, received the award in 1996. The Baldrige award, often described as "the standard of business excellence," was established by Congress to promote awareness of performance excellence, recognize quality and business achievements of U.S. companies, and publicize successful business excellence strategies. The Spicer Driveshaft Division was one of two recipients in the manufacturing category this year and one of only 19 operations to have garnered the honor for manufacturing since it was first awarded in 1988. Dana Chairman and CEO Joe Magliochetti said, "Dana Corporation is honored for the second time to have an operation win America's highest quality award. This achievement is particularly significant in that it recognizes a major manufacturing unit, its people, and its dedication to total quality and continuous improvement. "This honor demonstrates that Dana's pioneering efforts in the areas of quality and customer service are having the desired impact. The Dana Style and the Dana Quality Leadership Process -- two competitive advantages unique to the Dana Corporation -- contributed to this recognition." "This award is a real tribute to the hard work and commitment of our people," said Joe Sober, vice president and general manager of the Spicer Driveshaft Division. "The Spicer Driveshaft Division is fortunate to be part of a corporate culture that encourages people to take ownership of their actions, initiate improvements, and demonstrate a passion for service to our various stakeholders." Since 1992, Spicer Driveshaft has used the Dana Quality Leadership Process, which is based on the Baldrige criteria, to evaluate and improve the performance of its various operations in key quality categories. As part of the Baldrige Award process, the Spicer Driveshaft Division underwent a rigorous evaluation, which included an independent review of the application by various examiners from public and private sectors, a consensus meeting among eight Baldrige examiners, and a week-long site visit. Spicer Driveshaft Division was evaluated in seven categories -- leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, information and analysis, human resource focus, process management, and business results. The award caps a year in which Dana operations have received numerous quality accolades. Among them, Dana facilities have received 10 Baldrige- based state quality awards -- bringing to 37 the number of state awards presented to Dana operations in the last five years. Additionally, Dana was named to a list of the "World's 100 Best-Managed Companies" by IndustryWeek magazine for the third consecutive year. Dana's global driveshaft operations have received international quality recognition, as well. Last year, Dana earned Australia's Best Manufacturer Award, Taiwan's National Quality Control Circle Award, and the State of Rio Grande do Sol Gold Trophy in Brazil.
