Arizona Inspection Data Added to Carfax.com Database; Two Million Records to Help Stop $10 Billion Lost to Odometer Fraud

FAIRFAX, VA--Nov. 21, 2000--Carfax.com, the Internet's leading provider of vehicle history information, announces the addition of over two million new records to its national database of over one billion vehicle records.
These Arizona inspection records include odometer readings, which when combined with information acquired by Carfax.com from more than 150 different resources help reveal odometer discrepancies and alert consumers to potential odometer rollbacks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates odometer fraud will cost Americans up to $10 billion this year.
Carfax.com kept Stephanie Marina of Charlotte, NC, from contributing $20,000 of her own money to that figure. "I was ready to sign a deal for a 1996 Chevy Tahoe--the mileage was stated as 50k--thanks to Carfax, I discovered that the odometer had been rolled back and the actual mileage was over 71k miles," she explains.
When shopping for a used car, consumers should ask the seller to provide a detailed vehicle history report. Carfax certified dealers can provide free reports to consumers. A list of participating Carfax dealers can be found at Carfax.com. If a seller does not offer a report, buyers can visit Carfax.com to purchase unlimited access to the company's database for 60 days for $19.95.
Individuals who purchase and receive Carfax reports that confirm a clean title history automatically receive the "Clean Title History Guarantee" worth 10% of the value of their vehicle up to $1,000. Used car dealers interested in signing up for the Carfax service should call 800/444-0145. Carfax, Inc., is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Southfield, Michigan, based R.L. Polk Company.
