Philips Semiconductors Speeds Move to 42V Automotive Power SystemsSUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 20 Philips Semiconductors, a division of Royal Philips Electronics , is leading the automotive industry's move from 13.8V to 42V power systems by releasing a family of 75V PowerMOS devices. Early release means customers can qualify the PowerMOS devices in time for incorporation into future product designs. The 75V PowerMOS family, which will be seen in vehicles from 2003, will help engineers to address the power needs of a wide range of 42V automotive loads. The long awaited move to 42V will give manufacturers the opportunity to increase the quantity of electronic equipment in vehicles. The result is that vehicle users will enjoy a far greater range of benefits from features, such as brighter headlamps and better brakes, new and powerful information and entertainment systems and more efficient air conditioning systems. Pascal Langlois, Vice President and General Manager of the automotive market segment at Philips Semiconductors said, "Philips Semiconductors early investment in 42V power products is giving its customers the earliest possible opportunity to reap the technological and commercial benefits of moving to the new 42V standard". This move to 42V is not only due to an increase in extra comfort and safety features, but also because of mechanical systems being replaced gradually by electrical motors and actuators as part of a drive to increase efficiency and cut pollution.
