Perceptron Announces First Major New Order for Paint Inspection SolutionsPLYMOUTH, Mich., Nov. 20 Perceptron, Inc. today announced the receipt of an order for its new Autospect(R) web-based inline quality measurement system. This significant order comes from an important Japanese car manufacturer known globally for best-in-class quality. Eight systems totaling over $1 million are scheduled for installation before July, 2001, in multiple lines within three plants in Japan, including a plant that manufactures the customer's luxury vehicle products. The Autospect(R) system leverages Perceptron's sophisticated IPNet(TM) architecture and incorporates advanced technologies such as solid-state lighting and digital imaging. The system measures the quality of finished painted surfaces, determining and calibrating the parameters of gloss, distinction of reflected image, and orange peel, and producing a visual correlation rating that provides a reliable and repeatable evaluation of the paint quality and the paint process. Alfred A. Pease, chairman, and chief executive officer, commented, "We are very excited about this new order for a number of important reasons. This Japanese customer is renowned for the quality of its vehicles and particularly the quality of paint finishes. Their adoption of this technology validates its value to manufacturers worldwide who look to the Japanese manufacturer as a quality leader. The installations also underscore the importance of real- time control of paint processes, resulting in an increased visibility of the other paint inspection solutions like PaintScan(TM). In addition, the order represents what we hope will become a more expansive presence in the Japanese market for other Perceptron products, both for gauging and for paint inspection."
