Con-Way Central Express Opens New Rochester Facility; Company Cites Business Growth in Area
CHILI, N.Y.--Nov. 20, 2000--Citing growing business volume in the area, Con-Way Central Express (CCX) announced the opening of its new Rochester area service center. The new facility began operations on November 20."CCX's business levels have increased an average of 20 percent a year in the Rochester metropolitan area," said Richard V. Palazzo, president and chief executive officer of CCX. "We were beginning to stretch the capacity of our facility. Too much freight in a trucking facility can impair service. Before that happened we built a state-of-the-art facility to handle current freight volumes as well as accommodate future expansion for years to come." CCX is a regional less-than-truckload commercial freight carrier based in Ann Arbor, MI.
According to company officials, the 54-door facility at 300 International Blvd. in Chili will provide earlier pick-up and delivery service for businesses in the greater Rochester metropolitan area.
According to Palazzo, the facility will be able to handle four times as much freight as the previous facility. The new 16-acre site is located within the Rochester International Commerce Center and includes a 26,000 square foot building. A cross-dock terminal accounts for 19,500 square feet and 6,500 square feet are allotted to office space. The company's previous facility was located at 100 Mushroom Blvd. in Rochester. The new location is close to major highway arteries and the Greater Rochester International Airport. It is also close to the new Canadian fast ferry service linking Toronto and Rochester, scheduled to begin operations in 2001.
CON-WAY officials declined to put a cost on the new facility but did say that the local investment was part of an ongoing program in which the company adds over 100 new dock doors a month to their North American service network.
Pat Barrett is the service center manager for the new facility. He has been in the transportation industry since 1974. The facility opens with 37 employees and plans to hire additional staff over the next couple of years as business volumes dictate.
