PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- AMA Pro Racing has joined with the country's premier race sanctioning bodies to become a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). AMA Pro Racing Director of Competition Merrill Vanderslice was appointed a seat on the "Safety at Motorsports Venues" committee of the NFPA, representing the only motorcycle racing entity on the 33-member panel. The committee also includes representatives from organizations such as NASCAR, NHRA, CART and racetracks nationwide. "Our affiliation with the NFPA ensures that we are at the forefront of motorsport safety," said Scott Hollingsworth, CEO of AMA Pro Racing. "Our active role in this organization allows us to best represent the interests of our stakeholders, and underscores our dedication to race fans and racers that racetrack safety remains utmost in our minds." The NFPA was established in 1896, and is recognized as a worldwide leader in providing fire, electrical, and life safety to the public. The mission of the NFPA is to reduce the burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by developing and advocating scientifically-based consensus codes and standards, research, training and education. One of the NFPA's more commercially recognizable programs are Sparky the Fire Dogâ and the National Fire Prevention Week. The Safety at Motorsports Venues committee is one of dozens of committees under the direction of the NFPA, which covers virtually every aspect of fire safety. The committee advises Carl E. Peterson, assistant division director of Public Fire Protection for the NFPA. The committee works to develop fire codes, standards and other initiatives to keep racing facilities as safe as possible.
