Doran, Powers Retire as Ford Vice PresidentsDEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 16 Wayne S. Doran, the chairman of Ford Land for 30 years, and William F. Powers, the leader of Ford Motor Company's research efforts, announced their retirements today as vice presidents of the auto company, effective Dec. 31. "Wayne Doran and Bill Powers worked very effectively over many years to advance the image and the capabilities of Ford Motor Company," said Ford President and CEO Jac Nasser. "Although their fields -- real estate and research -- are very different, both took on the challenge of our founder, Henry Ford, to make all endeavors deliver the highest value to the company. For their entire careers, they have served society as well." Doran retires as a vice president of Ford Motor Company and as chairman of Ford Motor Land Development Corp., a post that was established to oversee the auto company's strategic and operational real estate ventures. Doran joined Ford in 1969 and became chairman of Ford Land in 1970. One of Ford Land's major projects was the creation of the Fairlane development, a 2,360-acre planned community surrounding many of the corporate buildings in Dearborn. Doran is a trustee of the Urban Land Institute and chairman of the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport Commission. He is a director of the Henry Ford Health System, the Arizona State University Foundation Board, and is a member of the PGA Tour Board. He also serves on the executive board of the Detroit Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Powers retires as vice president - Research, a post he has held since 1996. He joined Ford in 1979 after a career with NASA, where he worked on the Saturn rocket and space shuttle programs, and at the University of Michigan, where he was a professor of aerospace engineering, computer information and control engineering. Powers held many research laboratory positions at Ford and was the company's first director of Product and Manufacturing Systems for North America. In 1989 he was named to oversee Specialty Car Programs. He was appointed executive director of Ford Research Labs in 1991, and was given added responsibility for Information Systems in 1994. Powers is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. He also is a director of ITS-America and the Children's Research Center of Michigan, and serves on other government, university and society boards. Sean McCourt has been named chairman of Ford Land, replacing Doran, effective Jan. 1, 2001. McCourt joined Ford Land in 1986 and most recently served as director, Ford Land-Europe. Prior to joining the company, he was an executive with the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. A successor to Powers will be the subject of a later announcement.
