Northern California Gas Prices Edging Downward, AAA Monthly Gas Survey Shows; But Eureka, Yreka, and San Francisco are Highest in State

SAN FRANCISCO--Nov. 14, 2000--California motorists are seeing a second straight month's decrease in gas prices throughout the state, AAA reported today.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded self-serve gas in Northern California is $1.92, down 3 cents from October, but up 49 cents from last November, according to AAA's monthly gas survey. The nine-county Bay Area average is $1.95, down two cents from last month, but up fifty cents from a year ago.
"While it's good to see a little bit of relief at the gas pump," said AAA spokeswoman, Bronwyn Hogan, "AAA continues to urge motorists to shop around for the best price and to take steps to conserve fuel."
Eureka, in Humbolt County, has the highest gas price in the state at $2.10, the fifth straight month it has been over $2 per gallon. Yreka, in Siskiyou County, and San Francisco both report $2.05 per gallon, followed by San Mateo ($2.04), and Lake Tahoe ($2.03). Tracy, at $1.83, has the lowest reporting price in Northern California for the month.
The statewide gas price average is $1.82, down 3 cents from October, but up 45 cents from a year ago. Southern California reports an average of $1.77, with Los Angeles at $1.71. Highest gas in the southern part of the state is Bishop, at $2.05; the lowest there is Huntington Beach at $1.63.
Nationally, AAA reports the average price at $1.55 per gallon, the sixth straight month of gas prices at or above the dollar and a half mark.
"OPEC has increased production four times this year to stabilize prices," said Alan Kovski, oil analyst and managing editor of Energy Business Watch, "so we're not expecting any more increases in crude oil supply. Refineries are not stocking up on inventory, because they expect prices to drop seasonally still further. What it means to the consumer is that a slight, gradual lowering of prices through the end of the year. "
