Motor Trend Design Contest Winners AnnouncedContest Goes International With Winners From Venezuela, Brazil, Italy, Egypt and USA ANAHEIM, Calif., Nov. 10 Winners of the Motor Trend Automobiles for the New Millennium: Design Contest 2000 were officially announced on Wednesday, November 8, 2000, during Press Day at the 2001-Model California International Auto Show. This contest challenged amateur, student and professional designers from around the world to redesign a current 2000- or 2001-model car, truck, minivan or SUV into a vehicle for the year 2025. The top-five Design Student Finalists and top-five Design Professional Finalists received a free trip to the California International Auto Show to present their designs in person to a panel of judges. The prestigious judging panel included: Dave Morris, studio manager of the Brand Imaging Group, Ford Motor Company, Dan Ellis, president of Form Design and former chief designer of Subaru's California Design Center, Franz VonHolzmhausen, chief designer of GM's California Design Studio, Dave Cole, director of Industrial Design, Academy of Art College, Frank Saucedo, director of General Motors 5350 Industrial Concepts, Daniel Sims, Mitsubishi design director and Motor Trend Senior Editor Matt Stone. The overall winner of the contest was Omar Pirela of Maracaibo, Venezuela. Pirela, a 28-year-old design student, presented his design of a year-2025 Ferrari, titled "Hydrarossa Spyder," with the aide of a Spanish interpreter. Pirela received the "Best of Show" award, as well as the first place award in the Design Student category, winning a $1,000 scholarship. Other top winners included Manuel Alexandre Ferreira of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, who received a $1,000 cash prize as the first-place winner in the Design Professional Category. Mohamed Fouad Al-Gammal of Alexandria, Egypt, the first place winner of the Amateur: 18 and Older Category, will receive a complimentary trip to San Francisco, California to visit the Academy of Art College Spring Art Show. As the first place winner of the Amateur: 17 and Younger Category, Justin Yeun of West Hartford, Conneticut, will receive his choice of a summer study grant scholarship to the Academy of Art College or a scholarship to the Academy's Summer Art Experience. All contestants were required to provide three visual perspectives plus a detailed synopsis of how the vehicle design was conceptualized. "No other design contest offers finalists the opportunity to have their designs analyzed by the top design professionals in the automotive industry," said Matt Stone, senior editor of Motor Trend.
