UAW Marks Veterans Day

UAW Marks Veterans Day
    DETROIT, Nov. 10 The UAW is paying tribute to the nation's
armed services veterans in numerous union-sponsored Veterans Day observances
across the country.
    A Veterans Day ceremony will be held at the City Hall in Pontiac, Michigan
on Saturday, November 11.  At the White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, Michigan, a
1:30 p.m. balloon release will help raise funds for the National World War II
Memorial.
    Four Russian World War II veterans will be attending Veterans Day
ceremonies in Flint, Michigan.
    Region 9A, representing UAW members in New England, New York City, and
Puerto Rico, are conducting a book drive for veterans hospitals in the Bronx
and Rocky Point, New York and in North Hampton, New Hampshire.
    UAW members will be marching in Veterans Day parades in Hartford,
Connecticut, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Warren, Ohio.  Other UAW locals are
organizing memorabilia displays at Coopersville, Michigan and Bloomington,
Illinois.

    "We are especially proud this Veterans Day of our members and locals who
have put in so much time and effort to raise funds to help establish the
National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. and the Michigan Vietnam
Monument in Lansing, Michigan," said UAW President Stephen P. Yokich.
    "UAW veterans committees honor and remember the sacrifices and
contributions made by our armed forces veterans all year round through our
union's participation in Stand Downs to collect money and food for homeless
veterans and lobbying for veterans benefits," said UAW Skilled Trades Director
Rick Karas, who also directs the union's Veterans Department.
