GM Vehicle Sales Up 6.5% in October; GM Trucks - Best October & CYTD

DETROIT, Nov. 1 General Motors began the third
quarter and the new model year with its October vehicle sales up 6.5 percent
to 407,168 units. GM reported double-digit sales increases in all midsize
vehicle segments -- cars (up 11%), vans (up 30%), utilities (up 37%) and
pickups (up 17%). In addition, GM set new October sales records for mid vans.
The GM vehicle sales operations that posted the highest gains in October were
Pontiac (up 33%), Oldsmobile (up 13 %) and Saab (up 40%). GM remains on track
to set an all-time record for truck sales this calendar year.
October car sales climbed seven percent to 203,396 units and truck sales
rose six percent to 203,772 units. Several GM vehicles set October sales
records including Chevrolet Venture, the GMC Jimmy, Sonoma and Yukon XL,
Oldsmobile Alero and Silhouette and Pontiac Bonneville and Montana.
"With exceptional support from our dealers, our sales rebounded in
October. Our well-managed and successful interest rate incentive program
contributed to the increase as did our sales strength in key areas of the
market such as full-size utilities and midsize cars," said Bill Lovejoy, group
vice president of North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing.
"Although there are some signs of moderation in the industry our sales are
still running at a very healthy pace."
Calendar-year-to-date Performance
GM calendar-year-to-date vehicle sales rose 1.3 percent to 4,294,199
units.
Car sales were comparable to year-ago levels, while truck sales climbed
three percent. Sales of vehicles in key* car and truck segments continued to
be the driving force behind GM's strength during the first 10 months of this
year, rising five percent for the period.
On a segment basis, GM sales gains were greatest in the midsize car
segment (up 6%) as well as full-size vans (up 11%) and mid utilities (up 13%).
