The Polk Company Becomes a Contributor to the Amesaward.com LLC

SOUTHFIELD, Mich.--Oct. 31, 2000--The Polk Company announced today that it has become a contributing affiliate of the amesaward.com LLC, the Internet's authority on automotive environmental performance. As a result, Polk will provide vehicle registration data to amesaward.com in order to identify to consumers which 2001 brands/models are the most environmentally friendly.
"The Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington D.C. indicates that the number one recommendation for corporate environmental stewardship is to provide consumers with information on the environmental attributes of products that will help them make informed purchase decisions. Naturally, we are thrilled to participate in this effort by giving car and light truck consumers access to data," said Stephen R. Polk, CEO of Polk.
According to Larry Ranka, Co-founder of the amesaward.com, "It is just as important to rate large cars and light trucks as it is to evaluate smaller vehicles. With over 8 million large cars and light trucks sold annually, you can make a significant impact on the environment by shifting sales to the more environmentally sensitive brand models."
Amesaward.com (www.amesaward.com) is a privately held company that uses a patent-pending business process to turn highly technical environmental performance data of a vehicle into a consumer-usable form. Amesaward.com develops environmental ratings for cars and light trucks. Based on the ratings, Automotive Market Environmental Sensitivity (AMES) Awards(TM) are presented each model year to brand/models in the upper quartile of environmental performers in each of eight car and seven light truck categories. The AMES Awards cover the entire vehicle market, allowing consumers to decrease the effect of vehicles on the environment through their purchases, and retain their freedom in selecting vehicles that will satisfy their lifestyle needs. Manufacturers have the opportunity to gain market shares and increase profits by promoting their award winning brands/models. Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Novi, MI, amesaward.com (www.amesaward.com) provides the first environmental performance indicators at the industry compatible brand/model level.
Polk has served the automotive industry for 78 years and is the longest standing curator of automobile records in the United States. Founded in Detroit in 1870, Polk launched its motor vehicle statistical operations in 1922 when the first car registration reports were published. It now provides automotive solutions to nearly every segment of the motor vehicle industry as an analytical consultant and statistician, as a provider of database-marketing services, as a supplier of vehicle histories, and as a data enabler for geographic information systems. Based in Southfield, Mich., Polk is a privately held global firm, currently operating in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Holland, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.
