Porsche Cars North America Inc. Announces Tread Lightly! MembershipU.S. Sports Car Importer Supports Organization's Efforts to Promote Ethical Land Use ATLANTA, Oct. 31 Atlanta-based Porsche(R) Cars North America Inc. (PCNA) has joined Tread Lightly!, a not-for-profit organization with activities and programs designed to increase public awareness and encourage responsible outdoor practices to preserve our nation's natural resources and protect the landscape. Stuttgart, Germany-based Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is primarily known for its sports car and racing heritage, but the company has developed successful all-wheel drive systems and off-highway vehicles and is currently developing its Cayenne(R) sport utility vehicle (SUV), which will debut in 2002. PCNA is a wholly owned subsidiary Porsche AG and is the exclusive importer of Porsche cars for the United States. "Porsche Cars North America has partnered with Tread Lightly! because we support its mission, including its efforts to ensure our public lands and waterways remain open so everyone can respectfully enjoy the beauty of our great nation for many years to come," said Frederick J. Schwab, PCNA president and CEO. "When PCNA was headquartered in Reno, my family and I experienced the pleasures of responsible backcountry motoring. We enjoyed the great outdoors, but followed the Tread Lightly! philosophy of always making sure our impact on the land was minimal." By lending its support, PCNA hopes to spread the Tread Lightly! message, which says: Travel and recreate with minimum impact. Respect the environment and the rights of others. Educate yourself, plan and prepare before you go. Allow for future use of the outdoors, leave it better than you found it. Discover the rewards of responsible recreation. PCNA embraced the Tread Lightly! principles prior to joining the organization. To demonstrate the all-terrain capabilities of Porsche's all- wheel drive system (AWD), PCNA used a pair of specially outfitted 911(TM) Carrera(R) 4 coupes this past April to trek through the Mojave Desert along the 120-mile long Mojave Road. The nearly stock coupes, affectionately named Petunia and Max, became the first sports cars to navigate the Mojave Road. In November, the cars will hit the trail again for the Porsche North Rim Adventure, an attempt to traverse the rugged-yet-beautiful north rim of the Grand Canyon. A group of journalists and champion racecar driver Hurley Haywood will travel along unpaved trails more suitable for dedicated SUVs or other four-wheel drive vehicles. The exercise will demonstrate the overall strength and structural stiffness of the Carrera 4 and showcase Porsche's ability to build effective AWD systems as it prepares for the arrival of Cayenne SUV.
