Visteon's 'Virtual Vehicle Interior' Technology Named Finalist for PACE(TM) Award
DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 26 For the second year in a row,
Visteon Corporation has been named a finalist in the annual
Automotive News PACE(TM) Awards Program.
Since 1994, the Premier Automotive Suppliers' Contributions to Excellence
(PACE(TM)) awards have recognized automotive suppliers who are committed to
developing new innovations in product, technology, process and management
practices. This year, Visteon's GENPAD (Generic Ergonomically Nimble
Parametric Automated Design) has been recognized as a finalist for a PACE(TM)
award.
"We are constantly striving to develop technology that will truly benefit
not only our customers, but the end-user as well," said Steve Delaney, vice
president and general manager of Visteon's Interior/Exterior Systems. "GENPAD
has the consumers' best interest in mind -- it helps us design automotive
interiors that are safer and more comfortable for the consumer to use."
As a primary step in designing automotive interiors, Visteon uses GENPAD
to evaluate the impact of human factors on its products. GENPAD is a three-
dimensional solid modeling, knowledge-based computer tool used to quickly
explore the customization of many different automotive interiors. It takes
into account vision/reflection, reach, steering wheel blockage of
instrumentation, passenger comfort, and occupant safety factors.
"We have been using the GENPAD methodology for several years now,
providing immense ergonomic benefits to many of the vehicle interiors that we
engineer," said Ravi Thyagarajan, supervisor, computer aided engineering for
Vehicle Interior Systems. "Being a finalist for the 2001 PACE(TM) award
really underscores Visteon's pioneering efforts in this field."
To the consumer using GENPAD will mean increased comfort, easier vehicle
use, improved safety and enhanced reach zones. To the OEM it can add up to
dramatic reductions in development time and cost, reduction of costly late
design changes, rapid packaging evaluations and the ability to apply this to
several vehicle programs in order to create a wide variety of interiors.
The PACE(TM) awards are jointly sponsored by Cap Gemini Ernst & Young and
Automotive News. The awards program is in its seventh year.
