The purchase order consists of 14,000 units, scheduled for delivery by the end of the year. DENSO is responsible for the design and production of the in-vehicle ETC equipment while Toyota Tsusho is responsible for distribution to the Chinese company and acts as a liaison. The ETC system has been in service in Chongqing since July 8, 2000, for payment of passage on three toll bridges over the Changchiang River. Currently, 7,000 vehicles with DENSO's ETC equipment on board enjoy the electronic toll service. Installation of in-vehicle ETC equipment has been promoted in Chongqing, mainly targeting taxis and buses which use tickets for toll payment over three bridges, in order to mitigate traffic congestion and improve efficiency of toll collection. DENSO also supplied its in-vehicle ETC equipment for a pilot operation that is currently underway in the Tokyo metropolitan area, Japan. The Electronic Toll Collection System allows automatic payment of toll without stopping at a tollgate. This is made possible through wireless communications utilizing 5.8 GHz band microwave between the in-vehicle equipment and an antenna installed at a tollgate. DENSO, a specialist for vehicle-to-roadside communication, currently provides in-vehicle ETC equipment and antennae.
