Toyota Doubles Commitment to The College Fund/UNCF
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. (TMS)
announced tonight that it will double its commitment to The College Fund/UNCF.
Over the past twelve years, TMS has annually funded 20 scholarships at
UNCF-member colleges. Tonight's announcement increases that commitment to a
total of 40 scholarships providing a $2 million TMS investment to UNCF.
The announcement was made at The College Fund/UNCF's Patterson Award
Dinner, where TMS President and CEO Yoshimi Inaba received the prestigious
Frederick D. Patterson Award. TMS and Inaba were recognized for over a decade
of support to historically black colleges and universities.
"This is a powerful commitment for us, but a small price to pay for
developing some of tomorrow's most-talented leaders," said Inaba. "Our hope
is that other companies will recognize the value of these students' work and
duplicate our commitment to UNCF."
Students participating in the Toyota/UNCF scholarship program receive an
annual stipend of $7,500 for four years. In addition, the students are given
the opportunity to serve an internship at TMS headquarters in Torrance, CA
during the summer between their junior and senior year of college. To date,
50 Toyota scholars have earned degrees, 47 of whom have interned at TMS.
Toyota has provided more than $126 million over the last nine years in
support of education initiatives, as well as health and human services,
community development, and the arts.
