Lazer Transportation Services Delivers Michigan's Manufacturing Strength Around the World, One Giant Crate at a Time

TAYLOR, Mich.--Oct. 18, 2000--Some of the people in Southern Italy will marvel at the size of one of the three giant crates as they make their way this week by special truck escort from the Bay of Naples.
But, even after seeing these extra wide loads these people are not likely to appreciate the many businesses that came together to create this made-in Michigan, world class product, and what it takes to deliver it.
But at the port of Detroit, to the manufacturer, their many suppliers and those involved in the packaging and transportation, this cool, sunny morning was far from just another shipment. Lazer Transportation Services, a business of F.X. Coughlin Co., is overseeing the loading of a gigantic, three piece, $7.2 million dollar, 350,000 pound, Ingersol CM Systems crank shaft boring machine, bound by ocean freighter for final installation in Foggia, Italy.
The importance of this delivery was evident from the pride displayed in the efforts of all those involved. For everyone on hand for loading the machine, more than a dozen dock workers, two crane operators and the ship's crew were joined by as many on-lookers, the atmosphere was almost celebratory in nature.
The shipping line sent their newest vessel, the Ostkap, for this special shipment, which actually, was the first of six super-load shipments being managed by Lazer Transportation Services for Ingersol CM Systems and bound for major world markets this year.
The engineers who designed the sophisticated export packaging, along with the ship's Chief Officer Georgy Ivanov, gave each of the gigantic crates one last inspection to assure the machines were ready for their Atlantic crossing.
For many, this was clearly a formidable undertaking. "For our team at Lazer Transportation, it was another `day on the job;" said Vicky Gorno, Ocean Transportation Supervisor for Lazer Transportation Services. "After 18 months of preparation and coordination, it all came together today and we're all set and ready for our Atlantic crossing;" continued Gorno from the pier in Detroit.
What is significant is the legacy of one of the people responsible for establishing the modern Port of Detroit, the late Francis X. Coughlin, founder of the company that bears his name.
"Today, some forty years later, the F.X. Coughlin Company is still at work in a big way, linking Michigan area companies to the expanding world marketplaces." Said James R. Lhamon, Chief Operating Officer for Lazer Transportation Services.
This original business unit of F.X. Coughlin now serves manufacturers and other shippers in over 200 marketplaces worldwide. "Mr. Coughlin's vision for `personalized import and export services' make the link possible between local businesses and industries with the international commerce centers of the world;" continued Lhamon.
Joining Richard W. Schrank of Ingersol CM Systems for the arrival of the equipment in Naples will be Roberto Butta, Managing Director of Vector SRL, Lazer Transportation's agent in Italy. "We will be on-hand to ensure the final leg of the journey is a smooth one, both for the equipment and the paper work that accompanies any international shipment;" said Butta.

Coughlin Company, Lazer Transportation Services brings to its customers over forty years of alliances with the strongest players in over 200 marketplaces around the world including every major trade center in the United States.
