RNC Victory 2000: The Detroit News: Al Gore Is a Disaster for Autoworkers
Gore's Radical Car & Gas Tax Agenda Puts the Brakes On
                       Veep's Last-Ditch Michigan Drive

'Reaching (Gore's) Goal Would Require Shutting Factories
On a Massive Scale,' says The Detroit News in Scathing Editorial

WASHINGTON, Oct. 18 Al Gore's radical environmental agenda
could wreck his chances in Michigan, a state he must win if he has any chance
of becoming president. This morning, The Detroit News reminded the Vice
President that winning over autoworkers will be a tough sell, especially given
his anti-automobile views. The Detroit News began a 3-part series today that
crystallizes the worries of millions of autoworkers, throwing a huge wrench in
the gears of Al Gore's last-ditch drive win the Motor City. To see today's
editorial, go to http://detnews.com/EDITPAGE/0010/18/1edit/1edit.htm

Among other things, The Detroit News says the following:

    * "Reaching (Gore's) goal would require shutting factories on a massive
       scale."

    * "(t)he Vice President would press an environmental agenda at the
       expense of Michigan jobs."

    * "(Gore's) election threatens to expose Detroit to unparalleled
       government interference."

    * "A respected analysis by Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates
calculated that job losses in Michigan alone at 96,500 -- including
some 50,000 in manufacturing -- should Mr. Gore succeed in implementing
the elements of the Kyoto Treaty."

    * "Clearly, it's the auto industry that's in the balance in this
       election."
