Governor's Council, Oakland County Fitness Council Names ArvinMeritor Regional Amateur Sports Corporate Sponsor of the YearTROY, Mich., Oct. 17 ArvinMeritor, Inc. has been named as the Regional Amateur Sports Corporate Sponsor of the Year by the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports and the Oakland County Fitness Council. ArvinMeritor was honored by the Governor's Council for its sponsorship of the 1999 Metropolitan Detroit American Heart Walk at Oakland University, the largest American Heart Walk in the United States. The Heart Walk raised more than $840,000 for the American Heart Association in the fight against heart disease and stroke as 11,000 people participated in the walk. As a $30,000-platinum sponsor in 1999, ArvinMeritor provided human and financial resources to make the event a success. In addition to the sponsorship, the company recruited more than 16 teams, comprised of more than 300 ArvinMeritor employees, friends and families. The teams raised a combined total of nearly $29,000 through walker donations, and employee fundraisers such as "Jeans Day," bake sale and a flower sale. ArvinMeritor also was a lead sponsor for the 2000 Heart Walk where employees raised $35,000 in addition to the company's platinum sponsorship. Nominees for the Corporate Sponsor of the Year Award must financially sponsor amateur athletic events that are held in Michigan. The events must be open to Michigan citizens with a range of ages and capabilities. Sponsors nominated must not produce or actively encourage the use of alcohol or tobacco products, and sponsors must exhibit exemplary commitment to health and fitness. In the communities that are home to ArvinMeritor facilities, ArvinMeritor seeks to utilize its human and financial resources in partnership with local, private and public agencies to achieve measurable improvements in the quality of life.
