Governor's Council, Oakland County Fitness Council Names ArvinMeritor Regional Amateur Sports Corporate Sponsor of the Year
TROY, Mich., Oct. 17 ArvinMeritor, Inc. has
been named as the Regional Amateur Sports Corporate Sponsor of the Year by the
Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports and the Oakland
County Fitness Council.
ArvinMeritor was honored by the Governor's Council for its sponsorship of
the 1999 Metropolitan Detroit American Heart Walk at Oakland University, the
largest American Heart Walk in the United States. The Heart Walk raised more
than $840,000 for the American Heart Association in the fight against heart
disease and stroke as 11,000 people participated in the walk.
As a $30,000-platinum sponsor in 1999, ArvinMeritor provided human and
financial resources to make the event a success. In addition to the
sponsorship, the company recruited more than 16 teams, comprised of more than
300 ArvinMeritor employees, friends and families. The teams raised a combined
total of nearly $29,000 through walker donations, and employee fundraisers
such as "Jeans Day," bake sale and a flower sale. ArvinMeritor also was a
lead sponsor for the 2000 Heart Walk where employees raised $35,000 in
addition to the company's platinum sponsorship.
Nominees for the Corporate Sponsor of the Year Award must financially
sponsor amateur athletic events that are held in Michigan. The events must be
open to Michigan citizens with a range of ages and capabilities. Sponsors
nominated must not produce or actively encourage the use of alcohol or tobacco
products, and sponsors must exhibit exemplary commitment to health and
fitness.
In the communities that are home to ArvinMeritor facilities, ArvinMeritor
seeks to utilize its human and financial resources in partnership with local,
private and public agencies to achieve measurable improvements in the quality
of life. This is accomplished through a focus on education, cultural
programs, civic responsibility, and health and human services. In 1999, more
than 300 grants to non-profit organizations, totaling close to $2.5 million,
were made in ArvinMeritor communities worldwide, with more than half of those
funds going to support education.
