Wind River Introduces OSEK Product Line, Delivers Comprehensive Solution for Developing Automotive Applications

ALAMEDA, Calif.--Oct. 16, 2000--Wind River Systems, Inc. , a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, today announced general availability of a complete OSEK-compliant product line for the automotive market. Based on the rapidly emerging OSEK/VDX standard, the new OSEKWorks(TM) product line addresses the need for software solutions for extremely resource-constrained applications, such as automotive control systems for anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and engine and traction control.
With the automotive industry experiencing a rapid rise in electronics and software content, electronic subsystem spending is projected to rise from $59B in 2000 to $76B in 2003 (Dataquest). This increase is being driven by demand for greater performance, safety, and entertainment in vehicles, as well as lower required emissions. Although many companies today are still using in-house developed schedulers and micro-kernels, in order to meet increasing automotive market demands many are looking for more powerful development solutions in commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software from companies like Wind River.
The changes in the automotive market led to the development of the OSEK/VDX specification in Europe. The same pressures have contributed to its rapid acceptance and are also leading to its adoption in industries other than automotive. Wind River's OSEKWorks product line addresses the development needs of automotive customers by providing an OSEK-compliant COTS solution that enables them to focus on their value add and core expertise.
"We are extremely pleased that Wind River is integrating their OSEKWorks operating system with the Tornado development environment," said Tatsuya Kamei, manager of microcomputer software support ToolSystem LSI division, Mitsubishi Electric. "OSEK/VDX is being demanded by many suppliers and vehicle manufacturers in Japan, and Wind River's broad solution is ideally suited to empower our users to rapidly and efficiently develop embedded automotive applications."
"Due to globalization and the drive for more COTS solutions to reduce cost and shorten time to market, our customers in the automotive market need a strong OSEK solution," said Scot Morrison, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Transportation, Defense and Industrial business unit. "Wind River is excited to couple our internally-developed OSEKWorks micro-kernel with our leading Tornado(R) integrated development environment (IDE) to meet this demand. The strengths of the Tornado development environment combined with numerous WindLink(TM) partner solutions gives customers an unequaled development solution."

    Targeted Solutions

Wind River's OSEKWorks product family offers significant benefits through well-tested and proven run-time components that are small, fast and reliable. The OSEKWorks real-time operating system (RTOS) from Wind River is a highly optimized embedded operating system that is targeted at the emerging needs of the automotive industry. Its salient features include a very small size, starting at 1.5 kilobytes, as well as the ability to run certain applications with only a few hundred bytes of dynamic memory.
The tight integration of OSEKWorks with the widely used Tornado integrated development environment results in the most complete overall development solution available in the industry. Tornado for OSEKWorks offers a premium development environment for application groups developing production systems. Because of Tornado's large user base (over 50,000 developers worldwide), many customers can leverage their engineers' prior experience with the Tornado tools and reduce their development time and allow designers to work more efficiently sooner. In addition, third-party products from the over 500-member WindLink(TM) partner program as well as optional services from Wind River's Services business unit help to provide a complete, end-to-end solution for any project.
Tornado for OSEKWorks is available on a number of 16 and 32 bit processors, including the Mitsubishi M32R, Motorola PowerPC, HC12 and M*Core, Infineon 167 and TriCore, and the ARM. Additional processors will be available later this year. For more information, please call 800/545-WIND, go to www.windriver.com or contact your local Wind River representative.

    About the OSEK/VDX Standard

To address the development challenges facing the automotive industry, a group of major European automotive manufacturers and component suppliers, including BMW, Bosch, DaimlerChrysler, Renault, Siemens and Volkswagen, defined the OSEK standard. The design objective for OSEK was to specify a product that delivered the portability, scalability, vendor-independence, and productivity demanded by the industry within the code size and performance constraints of deeply-embedded applications. OSEK defines a standard API for the operating system and network components, which helps to ensure seamless interoperability for embedded devices based on OSEK technology. The full name for OSEK is OSEK/VDX, derived from the German phrase for "Open System and Interface for in-Car Electronics" and the French phrase "Vehicle Distributed Executive."
