Mitsubishi Motors Supports Child Pedestrian Safety With Donation to Local CommunityCYPRESS, Calif., Oct. 16 Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA) and its more than 500 dealers nationwide are promoting ways to increase the safety of children and teenagers walking, riding bicycles or engaging in sports near traffic through "See a Child, Save a Child(TM)," a nationwide safety campaign. "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that child pedestrian deaths are four times higher on Halloween than any other time of year," said Pierre Gagnon, executive vice president and chief operating officer for MMSA. "One of the most dangerous periods for young pedestrians is nighttime, especially after the end of Daylight Savings Time," Gagnon added, "but regardless of the time of year, we are always concerned with keeping our children safe on the streets." Mitsubishi Motors' dealers across the nation will have "See a Child, Save a Child(TM)," safety material available in their dealerships, including safety kits and tip sheets on child and booster seat safety, seat belt safety and trunk entrapment avoidance. Each kit contains a colorful set of 20 reflective stickers that increase pedestrian visibility in low light conditions. These reflectors easily adhere to skateboards, bicycles, roller blades and helmets and can be temporarily affixed to backpacks and clothing. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, once every eight minutes a pedestrian is injured in a motor vehicle crash and once every 101 minutes a pedestrian is killed; 25 percent of all traffic fatalities are pedestrians between ages five and nine and 30 percent of all cyclist fatalities in traffic crashes are between the ages of five and 15. More information on the "See a Child, Save a Child(TM)" program can be found in the November 2000 issue of Good Housekeeping magazine, and by visiting the Mitsubishi Motors website at http://www.mitsubishicars.com. Community members can also place individual orders for additional safety kits through Mitsubishi Motors' website. Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. was established in 1982 by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Tokyo, and markets a full line of vehicles, including coupes, convertibles, sedans and sport utility vehicles.
