DaimlerChrysler AG's CIO Receives Information Technology Award at Oakland University's Managing Information Technologies ConferenceSue Unger recognized for Innovation and Excellence in the Application of Information Technology in Business AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 16 Sue Unger, DaimlerChrysler AG's Chief Information Officer, was honored Friday night, October 13 by Oakland University (OU) and TekInsight.com, a leading Internet e-government integrator, for her dedication to the advancement of research and application in information technology. Unger received OU's first Applied Technology in Business (ATiB) Program Award during the school's third annual Managing Information Technologies Conference October 13-14. "We're pleased to recognize Sue for her contribution to the field of Information Technology," said Mohan Tanniru, Director of the ATiB program and MIS Professor. "Sue faced a variety of challenges with the merger of Daimler- Benz and Chrysler Corporation, including establishing a global centralized IT organization for the new company from two very different business models. With a unique background in Finance, Sue has transitioned seamlessly into IT and provided tremendous leadership in a field that changes daily." Unger was named Senior Vice President and CIO for DaimlerChrysler AG on November 1, 1998. She is responsible for directing information technology strategies and planning, systems applications development, data center operations and telecommunications network operations for DaimlerChrysler worldwide. "I'm honored to accept this award on behalf of the hundreds of people who work with me to keep DaimlerChrysler on the leading edge of information technology," said Unger. "Innovation has to be one of the core competencies of any IT organization, and I'm pleased to say that I work with some of the most 'out-of-the-box' thinkers in the industry." Unger joined Chrysler in September 1972 as a finance analyst in Sales and Marketing and has held various positions in Finance and Product Development before moving to the IT area in 1993. Unger was recently named one of Automotive News 100 Leading Women in the North American Automobile Industry. In 1999, she was included in CIO Magazine's CIO 100 Award and also received the Communication Week Visionary Award in 1998. The Managing Information Technologies Conference addressed issues faced by organizations as they incorporate advanced information systems technologies into their management activity. The Applied Technology in Business (ATiB) program was founded in 1997 by the School of Business Administration at Oakland University to teach business students how to apply information technology to solve business problems. Students work on problems posed by sponsoring companies such as Champion, Compuware, DaimlerChrysler, EDS, Eaton, Lear, MSX International and Volkswagen of America. Since it was founded, the program has had over 35 company sponsors and the students have worked on over 105 IT application problems.
