Delphi to Become Contributing Organization To Automotive Multimedia Interface Collaboration (AMI-C)
DETROIT, Oct. 16 Delphi Automotive Systems
announced today that it has been tentatively selected as a contributing
organization to the Automotive Multimedia Interface Collaboration (AMI-C), a
group of 12 global vehicle manufacturers formed to facilitate the development,
promotion and standardization of automotive multimedia interfaces to vehicle
communication networks.
The announcement was made today at Convergence 2000, a premier global
electronics forum being held in Detroit.
A contributing organization is a supplier partner that participates in the
development of AMI-C specifications and is selected by AMI-C based on its
capabilities and commitment to the future of the automotive electronics
industry. One of AMI-C's objectives is to develop specifications for
electronic devices and connections that will be interchangeable and
interoperable among vehicle models of participating vehicle manufacturers.
This will enable suppliers like Delphi to sell the same components to various
vehicle manufacturers. Vehicle manufacturers, in turn, will be able to use
components from different suppliers.
Other benefits that AMI-C specifications offer to the industry include:

    * Improved flexibility and expandability to add or remove components cost
      effectively.
    * Reduced time to market for new technologies.
    * Capability to upgrade components during a vehicle's life cycle without
      major redesign.
    * Ability to interchange hardware components and software applications.
    * Capacity to smoothly evolve automotive multimedia devices with changing
      technology.

"As a world leader in the design and development of automotive electronics
and connection systems, Delphi is committed to providing quality,
competitively priced products for the automotive multimedia market," said
Robert Schumacher, director, Delphi Mobile MultiMedia Business Group. "A
partnership with AMI-C will allow us to use our technological expertise to
positively influence the future of the automotive electronics industry, which
will benefit our worldwide OEM customers and will, in turn, ultimately benefit
the consumer."
AMI-C was conceived in 1998 by a global group of six vehicle
manufacturers. In 1999, 12 vehicle manufacturers formed a collaboration in
support of AMI-C's goals and visions. The organization's purpose is to
facilitate the development, promotion and standardization of automotive
multimedia interfaces to vehicle communication networks. AMI-C can be found
on the Internet at http://www.AMI-C.org .
Multi-national Delphi Automotive Systems, with headquarters in Troy,
Mich., USA, Paris, Tokyo and Sao Paulo, Brazil, is a world leader in mobile
electronics and transportation components and systems technology. Delphi's
three business sectors -- Dynamics & Propulsion; Safety, Thermal & Electrical
Architecture; and Electronics & Mobile Communication -- provide comprehensive
product solutions to complex customer needs. Delphi has approximately 216,000
employees and operates 184 wholly owned manufacturing sites, 44 joint
