International Rectifier Announces Industry's First Plastic Packaged 200 Degree C HEXFET Power MOSFET

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--Oct. 16, 2000--International Rectifier has introduced the first commercially available HEXFET(r) power MOSFET with a maximum temperature rating of 200 degrees C in a TO-220 plastic package.
The IRF1704 is an extremely rugged, low on-resistance HEXFET power MOSFET manufactured using IR's stripe planar technology and is ideal for existing and emerging automotive applications, such as electric power steering (EPS), electro-hydraulic power-assisted steering (EHPAS), electric braking and electric valve operation, as well as window lift control, wiper motor and fuel and water pump control circuits.
Since ambient temperatures in automotive under-the-hood applications reach as high as 135 degrees C, device specifications are becoming increasingly stringent. The industry-standard range of automotive MOSFETs is rated for 175 degrees maximum junction temperature, while the IRF1704, rated at 200 degrees, increases device safe operation area (SOA). At high ambient temperatures, the IRF1704 can carry up to 20 percent more current than similar devices in the same outline.
Gordon Gray, Technical Marketing Manager for the Automotive Group at International Rectifier, said, "While all applications can benefit from devices with a higher junction operating temperature, the automotive industry has a more obvious and compelling need for high temperature MOSFETs. For example, overload capability over a sustained period is extremely important when the 'park cycle' could be a few minutes, in systems such as EPS and EHPAS systems. The IRF1704 can increase safety, reliability and overload survivability in under-hood applications."
Applications with severe stalled-overload and restricted cooling conditions such as window lift control, new wiper motor circuits, and fuel and water pump control circuits can also benefit from the new IRF1704. Other application areas include the electric traction market, including forklift trucks and leisure vehicles.
"International Rectifier's 200-degree technology is more efficient and reliable in applications where overloads are unclear and larger safety margins are required. The IRF1704 will be extremely useful to the automotive industry in higher power applications," Gray continued.

    Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the IRF1704 is US $2.10 each in 10,000-unit quantities. Samples for the new IRF1704 are available now. The device will be Q101-qualified upon production release in the first calendar quarter, 2001. Data sheets are available on the International Rectifier Web site, www.irf.com.
