PowerSmart Announces `SmartShunt' - Industry's Highest Accuracy, Advanced Battery Monitoring and Reporting Sensor

    SHELTON, Conn.--Oct. 11, 2000--

For Starting Battery Systems, Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Standby Telecommunications Battery Backup, And UPS Battery Backup Applications

PowerSmart has announced the availability of the PS3180 SmartShunt(TM) Battery Monitor for prototype evaluation. The SmartShunt is the industry's highest accuracy, advanced battery monitoring and reporting sensor. The SmartShunt is a battery monitoring circuit integrated onto a high-current shunt assembly. It performs all major battery monitoring and reporting functions including voltage, temperature, current and current integration (Ahr) measurements, as well as providing state-of-charge and battery health information via an advanced communications bus.
The battery sensor is initially offered in 25 and 100 amperage ratings. Alternate current ratings and customized mechanical mounting dimensions are also available. Its small size (1.41" L x <1/3" H) allows the SmartShunt to be easily integrated into a compact smart battery solution.
The SmartShunt is based on PowerSmart's proprietary IC which has an on-chip 14-bit integrating A/D converter, on-chip 8-bit RISC microprocessor, and on-chip serial communications interface, in addition to PowerSmart's patented, self-learning algorithms and 3-dimensional battery cell models. (Soft calibration of the A/D converter and PowerSmart's patented algorithms and 3-dimensional battery cell models are key to providing high accuracy battery monitoring.)
Target applications for the sensor include 12, 24, and 42V starting battery systems, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), standby telecommunications battery backup, and UPS battery backup. Pricing for the SmartShunt is less than $20.00 for 1000-piece quantities.
For more information about the SmartShunt, contact Dennis Buchenholz, Director of Business Development at PowerSmart's Systems Division in Needham, MA; Tel.: (781) 453-8840; FAX: (781) 453-8834; dbuchenholz@powersmart.com; or visit PowerSmart's Web site: http://www.powersmart.com.

PowerSmart will also be featuring the SmartShunt at Covergence 2000, Cobo Hall, Detroit, MI, Oct. 16-18, Booth # 1147.
