Powerful 18-Cylinder Engine Is Designed Specifically for the Mining Industry
LAS VEGAS - Cummins Inc. today unveiled its powerful new QSK78 engine -- the largest engine in the world for the mining industry -- at MINExpo International 2000.The 18-cylinder, 78-liter, 3500 hp QSK78 engine delivers more power than any engine in the mining industry. The QSK78 was designed by Cummins in conjunction with Komatsu through their technical joint venture, Industrial Power Alliance (IPA), and is built at the Cummins plant in Daventry, England.
"The QSK78 delivers an extremely valuable `one-two' punch as the largest and most environmentally friendly diesel engine for today's mining industry. With its superior reliability and low operating cost -- the results are higher productivity and increased uptime for Cummins mining customers," said Mark A. Levett, vice president and general manager -- high-horsepower business at Cummins. "Being a logical extension of our already highly reliable and durable QSK engine family, the new QSK78 will power the largest equipment being introduced in the mining industry with the cutting-edge technology our customers need to reach their business goals."
The QSK78 engine features Cummins most advanced electronic engine management and air-handling technology, capable of operating in the most severe conditions, including altitudes as high as 12,000 feet, without derate. The key to the QSK78's performance advantage is in its design -- two-stage turbocharging with intercooling and aftercooling features to provide the engine with cool, highly compressed air at high altitudes for higher efficiency, lower emissions and smoke control.
