Land Rover North America, Inc.'s Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle Program Sets All-Time Sales Record

    Sales of Certified Land Rovers Up 84 Percent at Close of Third Quarter

    LANHAM, Md., Oct. 6 Certified Pre-Owned Land Rover
vehicles are selling at a record rate.  In fact, at the close of the third
quarter of 2000, sales of Certified Land Rovers are tracking 84 percent ahead
of 1999's record total of 2,702 units.  In fact, Certified sales are on pace
to surpass 5,000 units for calendar year 2000.
    "Now it its third year, the Land Rover Certified Pre-Owned program has
become an important part of Land Rover's sales strategy because it offers the
Land Rover ownership experience to more people," said Jim Paugels, manager,
Land Rover Pre-Owned Vehicles.  "Nearly all of our 124 retail outlets are in
the Certified business, and every retailer that features Certified Pre-Owned
Land Rovers continues to report good traffic and lots of interest.  This is
really no surprise, as our research indicates that consumers are eighteen
times more likely to purchase a manufacturer's certified pre-owned vehicle
than a non-certified vehicle."
    Nearly 70 percent of the 3,609 Certified Land Rovers sold year-to-date
have been Land Rover Discovery models.  "We have a good supply of off-lease
Discovery models coming into the Land Rover Centres right now," said Paugels.
The median transaction price for a Certified Land Rover Discovery is $19,100,
well below the $34,975 MSRP of a new 2001 Discovery Series II SD (destination
charge of $625 included).  With a standard V8 engine; permanent four-wheel
drive; four-channel, all-terrain ABS; and the strength and durability Land
Rover is known for, Certified Discoverys have become popular alternative to
many new sport-utility vehicles.
    Certified Pre-Owned vehicles receive a 1-year/12,000-mile Limited Used
Vehicle Warranty that covers the engine, transmission, and permanent four-
wheel-drive system, as well as the fuel, cooling and HVAC systems.  Also
covered are the electrical and braking systems, suspension, steering, seals
and gaskets and other components.  Before becoming Certified, Land Rover
vehicles are put through a 100-point inspection by the retailer, during which
all components and subsystems on the vehicle-as well as all major exterior and
interior parts-are checked.  Lastly, all scheduled maintenance is brought up
