Steel - Still an Appeal for Ford, GM and DaimlerChrysler: Reports just-auto.comLONDON, Oct. 4 http://www.just-auto.com -- The Partnership for New Generation Vehicle (PNGV) has unexpectedly given the American steel industry an endorsement. The Automotive World report at, http://www.just-auto.com/features_detail.asp?art=294 says that the endorsement came after the PNGV admitted that it would not meet the proposed light-weighting targets by 2004 using advanced materials. Now, the PNGV, a programme between the US federal government, Ford, GM and DaimlerChrysler are to take a new look at light-weighting steel and creating vehicles that are up to 20 percent more economic. David Leggett, Managing Editor for just-auto.com says, "On the surface this might seem like good news for the North American steel industry but with lightweight vehicles demanding less steel, they might be left short changed."
