Steel - Still an Appeal for Ford, GM and DaimlerChrysler: Reports just-auto.com
    LONDON, Oct. 4 http://www.just-auto.com -- The Partnership
for New Generation Vehicle (PNGV) has unexpectedly given the American steel
industry an endorsement.
    The Automotive World report at,
http://www.just-auto.com/features_detail.asp?art=294 says that the endorsement
came after the PNGV admitted that it would not meet the proposed
light-weighting targets by 2004 using advanced materials.
Now, the PNGV, a programme between the US federal government, Ford, GM and
DaimlerChrysler are to take a new look at light-weighting steel and creating
vehicles that are up to 20 percent more economic.
David Leggett, Managing Editor for just-auto.com says, "On the surface
this might seem like good news for the North American steel industry but with
lightweight vehicles demanding less steel, they might be left short changed."
