Toyota Reports Best-Ever Third Quarter and September Sales
    TORRANCE, Calif., Oct. 3 Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.,
Inc., today reported best-ever September sales of 138,302 vehicles, up
15.4 percent over last September's record-setting sales.  This marks a
best-ever third quarter for Toyota and is the company's eighth month of
record-breaking sales since the beginning of the year.
    "There is no debating the strength of the economy," said Jim Press, TMS
executive vice president, "nor the importance of sustained consumer confidence
on record-breaking industry sales."
    Sales for the first three quarters of 2000 totaled 1,235,280, an increase
of 11.7 percent over the same period last year.
    Both TMS sales divisions posted record-breaking September sales.  Toyota
Division recorded sales of 121,414 units, up 14.4 percent.  September also
marks the first time that the Toyota Division, with total calendar-year-to-
date sales of 1,085,831 units, has surpassed the one-million sales mark by the
end of the third quarter.  The Lexus Division reported increased sales of
16,888 units, up 23.5 percent over the same period last year.
    The Toyota Division posted best-ever September passenger car sales of
75,774 units, up 19.9 percent over the same period last year.  The Toyota
Avalon full-size sedan enjoyed best-ever September sales of 9,068, an increase
of 110.4 percent.  ECHO subcompact sedan sales saw a strong month with
4,059 units sold.  Celica sport coupe and MR2 Spyder sales continue to race
ahead with 4,694 and 548 units sold, respectively.  Sales of the world's first
mass-produced gasoline/electric hybrid sedan, Prius, steadily increased with
981 September sales.
    Toyota Division light truck sales rose 6.2 percent, to 45,640, for a
best-ever September.  Sales were led by the Tundra full-size pickup, with
10,006 units sold, an increase of 75.6 percent over last September.  4Runner
mid-size SUV sales increased to 10,545 units, up 7.1 percent over the same
period last year.  The legendary Land Cruiser full-size SUV with 1,401 sales,
up 11.0 percent, enjoyed a best-ever September.
    The Lexus Division's record-setting  September  was  led  by  the  popular
RX 300, with sales of 6,997 units, an increase of 26.8 percent over last year.
The LX 470 saw increased sales of 1,352 units, up 30.5 from the same period
last year.  Sales of ES 300 increased to 3,208 units, up 8.7 percent.  GS 400
sales rose, with 706 units sold, up 67.3 percent.  The all-new IS 300 sport
sedan continued its hot streak with sales of 2,445 units.
    Sales of North American-built vehicles made up 61.4 percent of total
September sales.
