Ford Motor Company's September U.S. Sales Up 3%

Ford Motor Company's September U.S. Sales Up 3%September Sales Cap Record-Breaking First Nine Months and Model Year DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 3 U.S. consumers purchased or leased 340,415 cars and trucks from Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Jaguar, Volvo, and Land Rover dealers in the month of September, up three percent from a year ago. In the process, Ford Motor Company established new sales records for the first nine months of a calendar year and a new model year sales record. In the first nine months of 2000, Ford Motor Company's dealers delivered 3.33 million cars and trucks to U.S. customers breaking the previous record of 3.19 million set a year ago. In the 2000 model year, which concluded September 30, the company's dealers delivered 4.30 million cars and trucks breaking the previous record of 4.14 million also set a year ago. "Consumer demand for new cars and trucks remains very strong," said Bob Rewey, Ford Group Vice President, Global Consumer Services and North America. "Although we have seen some moderation from the extraordinary sales pace in the first quarter, several factors continue to support a healthy level of sales, including job growth, minimum levels of price increases, and many exciting new products." One of the newest products is the Ford Escape, which features front-wheel drive (with a four-cylinder engine) or all-wheel drive (with a six-cylinder engine) versions, front and rear independent suspension, and best-in-class interior room. In September, with limited availability, Ford Outfitters delivered 7,582 Ford Escapes even though advertising has been limited to the internet (http://www.mydreamescape.com ) and word of mouth. Ford Outfitters also delivered 37,510 Ford Explorers in September, up slightly (1.1 percent) from a year ago. "August and September sales suggest that consumer confidence in the Ford Explorer remains strong," noted Rewey. "In the coming months, however, sales will be hampered by low inventories resulting from three weeks of plant shutdowns to divert tires to the replacement tire market. Also, the Louisville (KY) and St. Louis (MO) assembly plants will be preparing for the launch of the 2002 Explorer." America's best-selling vehicle, the Ford F-Series pickup, posted September sales of 71,056, up two percent compared with a year ago. September sales for Ford's compact Ranger pickup were 25,852, up 26 percent. The Ford Focus had September sales of 24,755. Ford, America's best-selling brand of cars and trucks, posted September sales of 281,095, up six percent compared with a year ago. Lincoln sales in September were 16,516, up seven percent. Jaguar set a September record with sales of 3,007.
